Fairtrade co-op makes the Wondrous Vulva Puppets

Surrounding the city of Lima in Peru is the shanty town of Manchay, an area of extreme poverty with no running water, no sewage system and little electricity. Over 40,000 people live here. Their small homes, (about 12 sq. feet) are made of mud brick, plywood and cardboard. Most of the community literally exists hand to mouth.

With the help of partner, Liz Cabrel, Dorrie Lane has established a co-op in Manchay to sew the Wondrous Vulva Puppet. They have applied to Fair Trade International for membership. Word has spread throughout Manchay of the new enterprise. They are sharing the message on Planning, Prevention and Pleasure with the co-op members, serving the community with an opportunity to work and the message that women be honoured and healed, and that girls and boys be educated and empowered.

Pictured to the right are the two founding members of K'anchay Killya co-op, Dionisio an expert tailor and his wife, Doris. In the background is their daughter, demonstrating the Wondrous Vulva puppet to her friends.

All purchases of the Wondrous Vulva Puppet will support the co-op, K'anchay Killya. Fair Trade rules guarantee that members will receive a living wage and require the co-op to provide opportunities for advancement for employees, environmentally sustainable practices and healthy and safe working conditions. There is also a micro-loan system in place for co-op members.
