About Sound
Sound Formats
Sound samples on the computer are coded and compressed in a variety of formats. We have chosen the three most frequently used formats to provide within Yoni. These are called AIFF, AU and WAV. We have gained the best results from AIFF which can be sampled at a higher rate offering better sound from a smaller file. We recommend downloading our samples in this format if your sound helper app can cope with it. If you would like to see other formats available please email us.
Sound Helper Applications
In order to listen to the sounds you need an appropriate audio helper application. These can be downloaded pretty simply from the net and Netscape (if it is the browser you use) can be set up to pass on sound data automatically to the helper application. You can set it up to do this in the Helper Applications dialog box found under Preferences in the Options menu.
If you do not have an Audio helper application we recommend you download one of the following.
Recommended Sound App for Macintosh users:
SoundMachine created by Rod Kennedy is an excellent shareware program. You may download it and try it out for a while (two weeks) to make sure it works fine on your system. If you decide to continue using it after the trial period, then you can register and pay the US$10 fee.
Hint: Select the advance play button (4th from the left on the queue window) so that each new sound sample will play automatically when you download it. To keep the samples playing in a loop click the repeat button (3rd from left)
More information and a version to download can be found at the SoundMachine Download Site
Recommended Sound App for Windows users:
Our contacts tell us that the WPLANY (short for Windows PLAY any File), is an extremely simple sound playing application whose ease of use make it an ideal client for playing the sound clips from web sites. The application is freeware and packs into a mere 28 Kb. To download WPLANY click here.
For more information about sound (and other) helper apps for Windows check out The Consummate Winsock Apps List.
For other platforms:
We would love to hear from sound buffs on other platforms about the helper apps they use so that we can offer the information to our readers and also the appropraite sound files. Please e-mail us here if you have experiences with sound via other platforms.
Stringing the samples into a loop:
Most sound helper apps will let you put all the samples you have collected in a queue and will play them in a loop, one after the other. This gives you a good feel for the whole album.
To do this in Soundmachine 2.5.6 open the queue window and click the repeat all button (3rd button on the left).
